Doses - QUINACRINE HCL

As a drug of second-choice in the treatment of Giardia or other susceptible protozoa:

Dogs: Dog

a) 6.6 mg/kg PO q12h for 5 days (Papich 1992), (Sherding and Johnson 1994a)

Cats: Cat

a) 11 mg/kg PO once daily for 5 days (Papich 1992)
b) 6.6 mg/kg PO bid for 5 days (Barr and Bowman 1994)
Monitoring Parameters - 1) Efficacy (fecal exams, reduction in diarrhea); 2) Adverse Effects
Client Information - Quinacrine should preferably be given after meals with plenty of liquidsavailable. Be sure clients understand the importance of compliance with directions and to watch forsigns of adverse effects.

Human-Approved Products: There currently are no quinacrine products being marketed.
