Doses - FURAZOLIDONE

Dogs: Dog

a) For amebic colitis: 2.2 mg/kg PO q8h for 7 days; For coccidiosis: 8 - 20 mg/kg PO forone week (Sherding and Johnson 1994a)

Cats: Cat

a) For treatment of Giardia: 4 mg/kg PO twice daily (q12h) for 7 -10 day; if re-treatmentis required, elevated dosages or lengthened treatment regimens may provide betterresults. (Reinemeyer 1992)
b) For amebic colitis: 2.2 mg/kg PO q8h for 7 days; For coccidiosis: 8 - 20 mg/kg PO forone week; for Giardia: 4 mg/kg PO q12h for 5 days (Sherding and Johnson 1994a)

Horses: Horse

a) 4 mg/kg PO tid (Robinson 1992)
Monitoring Parameters - Efficacy (stool exams for parasitic infections)
Client Information - Furazolidone may discolor urine to a dark yellow to brown color; this is notsignificant. Have clients report prolonged or serious GI effects.
