For use as a plasma volume expander in shock:
Note: Rate of administration is determined by individual patient requirements (i.e., bloodvolume, indication, and patient response); adequate monitoring for successful treatment ofshock is mandatory. The following dosages are NOT "Give and forget"; they should beused as general guidelines for treatment.
a)

Dogs: Dog

20 ml/kg/day IV
Cats: 10 - 15 ml/kg IV (Morgan 1997)
b) Dog: 16 ml/kg (range 10 - 20 ml/kg/day; use rapid IV infusion for shock therapy)(Papich 1995)
c) Up to 30 ml/kg/day (Haskins 1992)
Monitoring Parameters - Other than the regular monitoring performed in patients that wouldrequire volume expansion therapy, there is no inordinate monitoring required specific to hetastarchtherapy.
Client Information - As hetastarch is used in an in-patient setting only, the two factors to considerwhen communicating with clients are the drug's cost and the reasons for using colloid therapy.
