Doses - HYDROXYUREA

Dogs: Dog

For polycythemia vera; chronic granulocytic leukemia:
a) 50 mg/kg 3 times per week (Jacobs, Lumsden et al. 1992)
b) For polycythemia vera: 30 mg/kg once daily for one week, then 15 mg/kg once dailyuntil remission; then taper to lowest effective frequency by monitoring hematocrit.(Raskin 1994)

Cats: Cat

For polycythemia vera; chronic granulocytic leukemia:
a) 25 mg/kg 3 times per week (Jacobs, Lumsden et al. 1992)
b) For polycythemia vera: 30 mg/kg once daily for one week, then 15 mg/kg once daily untilremission; then taper to lowest effective frequency by monitoring hematocrit. Cats mustbe monitored more frequently than dogs as they have a greater risk of developing bonemarrow toxicity. (Raskin 1994)
Monitoring Parameters - 1) CBC with platelets at least every 1-2 weeks until stable; then every 3months; 2) BUN/Serum Creatinine; initially before starting treatment and then every 3-4 months
