Doses - PIROXICAM

Dogs: Dog

As an antiinflammatory/analgesic:
a) 0.3 mg/kg PO every other day (q48h) (Boothe 1992)
As an adjunctive therapy of transitional cell carcinoma of the bladder:
a) 0.3 mg/kg PO once a day (Knapp, Richardson et al. 1994)

Cats: Cat

As an adjunctive therapy of transitional cell carcinoma of the bladder:
a) The author has seen several anecdotal dosage recommendations. These generally fallinto the: "0.3 mg/kg PO once a day to every other day with food" category. Use withcaution as therapeutic window is very narrow. (Plumb)
Monitoring Parameters - 1) Adverse Effects (particularly GI bleeding); 2) Liver function testsshould be monitored occasionally with chronic use
Client Information - Have clients monitor for GI ulceration/bleeding (anorexia, tarry stools, etc).
Do not exceed dosage recommendations without veterinarian's approval. It has been suggested togive the drug with food to reduce GI upset potential.
