Dogs: Dog

Prochlorperazine:
As an antiemetic:
a) 0.5 mg/kg IM or SubQ q8h (Washabau and Elie 1995)
b) 0.5 mg/kg IM tid-qid or 1 mg/kg PO bid (Morgan 1988)
c) 0.1 mg/kg IM q6h (DeNovo 1986)
Prochlorperazine/Isopropamide (Darbazine®)
a) As an antiemetic/antidiarrheal: 0.14 - 0.22mg/kg SQ bid (Morgan 1988)
b) As an antiemetic: 0.5 - 0.8mg/kg IM or SQ q12h (DeNovo 1986)
c) Injectable: Animals weighing:
Up to 4 pounds = 0.25 ml; 5 - 14 lb = 0.5 - 1 ml; 15 - 30 lb = 2 - 3 ml; 30 - 45 lb = 3 - 4 ml; 45 - 60 lb = 4 - 5 ml; over 60 lb = 6 ml
Oral:
Darbazine® #1: Weighing 2 - 7 kg: 1 capsule q12h PO; Weighing 7 - 14 kg: 2 capsules q12h PO

a) As an antiemetic: 0.5 - 0.8 mg/kg IM or SQ q12h (DeNovo 1986)
b) Injectable: Animals weighing:
Up to 4 pounds = 0.25 ml;5 - 14 lbs = 0.5 - 1 ml (Package Insert, Darbazine® - SKB)
Monitoring Parameters -
  • 1) Cardiac rate/rhythm/blood pressure if indicated and possible to measure
  • 2) Anti-emetic/anti-spasmodic efficacy; hydration & electrolyte status
  • 3) Body temperature (especially if ambient temperature is very hot or cold)
    Client Information - Observe animals for at least one hour following dosing. Dry mouth may berelieved by applying small amounts of water to animal's tongue for 10-15 minutes. May discolorthe urine to a pink or red-brown color; this is not abnormal. Protracted vomiting and diarrhea can beserious; contact veterinarian if symptoms are not alleviated. Contact veterinarian if animal exhibitsabnormal behavior, becomes rigid or displays other abnormal body movements.
