Doses - SODIUM IODIDE

Cattle & Sheep & Goats:Sheep

For treatment of actinobacillosis (woody tongue):
a) 70 mg/kg IV given as a 10% or 20% solution; repeat at least one more time at a 7-10day interval. Refractory cases may require more frequent (2-3 day intervals) treatment.
Severe, generalized, or refractory cases may require adjunctive tx with antibiotics (sulfas, aminoglycoside or tetracyclines). (Smith 1996a)
For treatment of actinomycosis (lumpy jaw):
a) 70 mg/kg IV given as a 10% or 20% solution at 7-10 day intervals or more frequentlyuntil signs of iodism occur (see Overdose above). Also requires adjunctive tx withantibiotics: isoniazid (10 mg/kg/day PO for one month), penicillin (10, 000 U/kg bid)and an aminoglycoside where treating a valuable animal or twice daily dosing for 7-14days is possible. (Smith 1996b)
For treatment of actinobacillosis or actinomycosis in sheep:
a) 20 ml of a 10% solution subQ; repeated weekly for 4-5 weeks (Howard 1986)

Horses: Horse

For treatment of sporotrichosis:
a) Sodium iodide 20 - 40 mg/kg orally daily for several weeks (Fadok 1992)
Monitoring Parameters/Client Information - Ruminants: 1) Clinical efficacy 2) Signs ofiodism (excessive tearing, nasal discharge, scaly haircoats/dandruff, hyperthermia, decreased milkproduction and weight gain, coughing, inappetence, and diarrhea). Although formal withholdingtimes were not located, there is concern about using this product in animals about to be slaughtered.
In the interest of public health, author recommends not using within 30 days of slaughter.
