Doses - FUROSEMIDE

Dogs & Cats: Dog Cat

As a general diuretic:
a) 2.2 - 4.4 mg/kg (lower dose suggested for cats) once or twice daily at 6-8 hour intervals
PO, IV or IM (Package Insert; Lasix® - Hoechst)
For cardiogenic or pulmonary edema:
a) 2 - 4 mg/kg PO for chronic therapy (may increase up to 8 mg/kg IV for acute short termsituations); dosage frequency may be from once every 2-3 days to every 6 hours fororal administration and as frequently as every hour for IV administration. (Kittleson1985)
b) 2 - 4 mg/kg IV, IM, PO bid-tid (Morgan 1988)
c) For Cats: 0.5 - 1 mg/kg IV, IM, SQ q8h - every other day.; may switch to oral therapywhen stabilized (Bonagura 1989)
For hypercalcemia/hypercalcuric nephropathy:
a) Patient should be well hydrated before therapy. Give 5 mg/kg bolus IV, then begin 5mg/kg/hr infusion. Maintain hydration status and electrolyte balance with normal salinewith KCl added. Furosemide generally only reduces serum calcium levels by only 3mg/dl. (Polzin and Osborne 1985)
b) For moderate hypercalcemia (14-16 mg/dl): Start infusion of normal saline, givefurosemide at 5 mg/kg IV once to twice daily. If dehydrated, alternate saline with LRS.
Also give glucocorticoids. (Weller 1988)
For acute renal failure/uremia:
a) After replacing fluid deficit, give furosemide at 2 mg/kg IV. If no diuresis within 1 hour, repeat dose at 4 mg/kg IV. If no response within 1 hour, give another dose at 6 mg/kg IV. The use of low dose dopamine as adjunctive therapy is often recommended; seedopamine monograph. (Polzin and Osborne 1985)
b) 5 - 20 mg/kg IV prn (Morgan 1988)
To promote diuresis in hyperkalemic states:
a) 2 mg/kg IV; attempted if mannitol is ineffective after one hour (Seeler and Thurmon1985)
As a diuretic for the treatment of ascites:
a) 1 - 2 mg/kg PO, SQ once to twice daily (Morgan 1988)
As an antihypertensive:
a) 1- 2 mg/kg PO bid (Morgan 1988)

Cattle: Cattle

a) 500 mg once daily or 250 mg twice daily; 2 grams PO once daily. Treatment not to exceed 48 hours post-partum (for udder edema). Package Insert; Lasix® - Hoechst)
b) 2.2 - 4.4 mg/kg IV q12h (Howard 1986)

Horses: Horse

As a diuretic:
a) 0.25 - 1.0 mg/kg IV (Muir and McGuirk 1987)
b) 1 mg/kg IV (Robinson 1987)
For epistaxis prevention:
a) 0.3 - 0.6 mg/kg 60-90 minutes prior to race. (Robinson 1987) (Note: Refer to state guidelines for use of furosemide in racing animals)

Birds: Bird

As a diuretic:
a) 0.05 mg/300 gm IM bid (Note: Lories are very sensitive to this agent and can be easily overdosed) (Clubb 1986)

Reptiles: Reptile

a) For most species: 5 mg/kg IV or IM as needed. (Gauvin 1993)
Monitoring Parameters -
  • 1) Serum electrolytes, BUN, creatinine, glucose
  • 2) Hydration status
  • 3) Blood pressure, if indicated
  • 4) Symptoms of edema, patient weight, if indicated
  • 5) Evaluation of ototoxity, particularly with prolonged therapy or in cats
Client Information - Clients should contact veterinarian if symptoms of water or electrolyte imbalance occur. Symptoms such as excessive thirst, lethargy, lassitude, restlessness, oliguria, GI distress or tachycardia may indicate electrolyte or water balance problems.
