Doses - MEDROXYPROGESTERONE ACETATE

Dogs: Dog

For progestin-responsive dermatitis:
a) 20 mg/kg IM; may repeat in 3-6 months if needed (Kunkle 1986)
For adjunctive treatment of aggressive behaviors:
a) 10 mg/kg IM or SQ (see Adverse effects above) as necessary; works best when combined with behavior modification. To treat inter-male aggression: as above, but do notexceed 3 treatments per year. (Voith and Marder 1988a)

Cats: Cat

To treat behavioral disorders:
a) Male cats: 100 mg IM initially, then reduce dosage by 1/3 - 1/2 and administer q30days. Female cats: As above, but use 50 mg IM (Beaver 1989)
b) 10 - 20 mg/kg SQ; may repeat as necessary up to 3 injections per year maximum (Voithand Marder 1988b)
For feline psychogenic alopecia and dermatitis:
a) 75 - 150 mg IM or SQ (see Adverse effects above); repeat as necessary, but never moreoften than every 2-3 months. (Walton 1986)
For progestagen-responsive dermatitis:
a) 50 - 100 mg IM may repeat in 3-6 months if needed (Kunkle 1986)
To treat recurrent abortion secondary to progesterone-deficiency:
a) 1 - 2 mg/kg IM once weekly, stop treatment 7-10 days prior to parturition (Barton and Wolf 1988)
To alleviate signs of estrus and mating activity:
a) 5 mg PO once daily for up to 5 days will alleviate signs within 24 hours. Parenteral
MPA at 25 - 100 mg will inhibit estrus from 2-4 months. (Wildt 1986)
b) 25 mg injected every 6 months to postpone estrus (Henik, Olson, and Rosychuk 1985)
For long-term reproductive control:
a) 2.5 - 5 mg PO once weekly (Henik, Olson, and Rosychuk 1985)

Birds: Bird

As an antipruritic and to suppress ovulation:
a) 0.025 - 1 ml (3 mg/100 grams body weight) IM once every 4-6 weeks. May causeobesity, fatty liver, polydipsia/polyuria and lethargy if used repeatedly. (Clubb 1986)
