Doses - CISAPRIDE

Dogs: Dog

As a promotility agent:
a) 0.5 mg/kg tid; decrease dose if abnormal GI signs or abdominal pain result. (Hall 1994)
b) To reduce regurgitation associated with megaesophagus: 0.55 mg/kg PO once to threetimes daily. Practically: 2.5 mg per dose for dogs weighing between 5-10 lbs.; 5 mg perdose for dogs weighing between 11-40 lbs; and 10 mg per dose for dogs greater than40 lbs. Administer no closer than 30 minutes before feeding. (Tams 1994)
c) As an antiemetic: 0.1 - 0.5 mg/kg q8h PO (Washabau and Elie 1995)

Cats: Cat

For chronic constipation (e.g., megacolon):
a) In combination with a stool softener (author recommends lactulose at a starting dose of2 - 3 ml PO tid; then adjust prn) and a bulk agent (e.g. psyllium or pumpkin pie filling)cisapride is given initially at 2.5 mg (for cats up to 10 pounds) or 5 mg (for cats 11pounds or heavier) tid, 30 minutes before food. Cats weighing greater than 16 poundsmay require 7.5 mg. (Tams 1994)
b) Used adjunctively with conventional dietary therapeutics: 1.25 - 2.5 mg per cat bid-tid;cats with hepatic insufficiency should be treated with half the usual dose; probably mosteffective when given 15 minutes before a meal. (Nixon 1994)

Horses: Horse

As a promotility agent:
a) Preliminary study: Author states that 0.1 mg/kg was superior to other doses used. Nomention of dosage route or frequency was noted. (Roussel 1992)

Client Information - Because cisapride is a "new" drug, inform client to watch carefully for andreport any adverse effects noted.
