Doses - FENPROSTALENE

Cattle:

To induce abortion in feedlot heifers at 150 days or less of gestation:
a) 1 mg SQ. Approximately 92% success rate. Abortion occurs on average 5 days afteradministration. (Package Insert; Bovilene®¯Syntex)
For estrus synchronization in beef cattle and non-lactating dairy cattle:
a) Single injection method: Use only animals with mature corpus luteum. Examine rectallyto determine corpus luteum maturity, anatomic normality, and lack of pregnancy. Give 1mg SQ. Estrus should occur in 1-5 days. Breed at usual time after detecting estrus.
Double injection method: Examine rectally to determine if animal is anatomicallynormal, not pregnant, and cycling normally. Give 1 mg SQ. Animals detected in estrusafter the first injection may be bred at the usual time relative to estrus. Those notentering estrus should be given a repeat dose 11-13 days after the first injection. Estrusshould occur in 2-5 days after second injection. Breed at usual time after detectingestrus or inseminate once at 80 hours post second injection, or twice at 72 and 96 hourspost second injection.
Any controlled breeding program should be completed by either observing animals(particularly during the 3rd week after treatment) and re-inseminating or hand matingafter returning to estrus, or turning in clean-up bull(s) to cover any animals returning toestrus. (Package Insert; Bovilene®¯Syntex)

Fenprostalene for Injection 0.5 mg/ml (500 micrograms/ml) in 20 ml and 50 ml vials; Bovilene®(Fort Dodge); (Rx) Approved for use in beef cat le and non-lactating dairy cattle. Nopreslaughter withdrawal is required when used as labeled. In uncooked edible tissues of cattle, safe concentrations for total residues have been reported to be 10 parts per billion (ppb) inmuscle, 20 ppb in liver, 30 ppb in kidney, 40 ppb in fat and 100 ppb at the injection site.
