Doses - ESTRADIOL CYPIONATE

Dogs: Dog

For pregnancy avoidance after mismating:
a) 0.02 mg/kg (ECP) IM within 72 hours of mating (Burke 1986)
b) 0.044 mg/kg (ECP) IM once during 3-5 days of standing heat or within 72 hours ofmismating (Woody 1988)
c) 0.044 mg/kg (ECP), not to exceed 1 mg total dose, IM once administered during estrusor early diestrus. (Olson et al. 1986)

Cats: Cat

For pregnancy avoidance after mismating:
a) 0.125 - 0.25 mg (ECP) IM within 40 hours of mating (Wildt 1986)
b) 0.125 - 0.25 mg (ECP) IM within 3-5 days of coitus (Woody 1988)

Cattle: Cattle

a) To terminate pregnancy by causing the regression of the corpus luteum: 4 - 8 mg IM ifgiven with 4 days of unwanted breeding. During the 4th to 7th months of pregnancy: 20mg IM; may require repeated doses for 2-3 days. If used after the 7 months ofpregnancy, dystocia, metritis, and retained placenta are common adverse effects. (Drost1986)
b) Cows: Anestrus: 3 - 5 mg IM; Pyometra: 10 mg IM; Retained placenta: 10 mg IM;
Persistent corpus luteum: 4 mg IM; Mummified fetus: 10 mg IM.
Heifers: Anestrus: 3 mg IM. (Package Insert; ECP® ¯ Upjohn)

Horses: Horse

For induction of estrus during the non-breeding season:
a) 10 mg estradiol cypionate will result in estrus 2-3 days after treatment (Squires and McKinnon 1987)
For induction of estrus in mares with "silent heat" during breeding season:
a) 1 mg estradiol (Squires and McKinnon 1987)
To enhance the mare's uterine defense mechanism:
a) 1 - 2 mg estradiol daily for 3-5 days (Squires and McKinnon 1987)
Monitoring Parameters - When therapy is either at high dosages or chronic; see adverse effectsfor more information.
Done at least monthly:
  • 1) Packed Cell Volumes (PCV)
  • 2) White blood cell counts (CBC)
  • 3) Platelet counts
    Baseline, one month after therapy, and repeated 2 months after cessation of therapy if abnormal:
  • 4) Liver function tests

    Estradiol Cypionate in Oil for Injection 2 mg/ml in 50 ml vials
