Doses - GLIPIZIDE

Cats: Cat

For diabetes mellitus:
a) In obese, non-ketotic cats: 0.25 - 0.5 mg/kg twice daily (Nichols 1992)
b) For nonketotic, relatively healthy (on PE) cats whose owners refuse to administer insulin: 2.5 mg PO twice daily with food (with increased fiber content). If vomiting, icterus and euglycemia have not occurred, dosage is increased to 5 mg PO twice dailyand continued for as long as the cat is stable. Dosage may need to be adjusted downward should hypoglycemia or toxicity occur. (Nelson and Feldman 1995)
c) 5 mg/cat PO q8-12h, with correction of obesity and dietary therapy (Nelson 1994)
Monitoring Parameters - Weekly exams during first month of therapy, including PE, bodyweight, urine glucose/ketones and several blood glucose exams. In addition, adverse effects(vomiting, icterus), and occassional liver enzymes and CBC.
Client Information - Clients should be informed on symptoms to watch for that would indicatedeither hypoglycemia or hyperglycemia and be instructed to report these to the veterinarian.
Compliance with dosing regimen should also be stressed.
