Doses - HETACILLIN POTASSIUM

Dogs: Dog

For susceptible infections:
a) 11 - 22 mg/kg PO bid, up to 44 mg/kg PO bid for stubborn UTI's. (Package insert;
Hetacin®-K¯Fort Dodge)
b) 10 - 20 mg/kg PO q8h (Kirk 1989)
c) 20 mg/kg PO tid (Morgan 1988)

Cats: Cat

For susceptible infections:
a) 50 mg PO bid (Package insert; Hetacin®-K¯Fort Dodge)
b) 10 - 20 mg/kg PO q8h (Kirk 1989)
c) 10 - 15 mg/kg PO tid (Morgan 1988)

Cattle: Cattle

For susceptible infections:
a) For mastitis: Infuse entire contents of one syringe into each affected quarter. Repeat at24 hour intervals until a maximum of 3 treatments are given. If definite improvement notnoted after 48 hours after treatment, further investigate causal organism. (Package insert;

Client Information - Unless otherwise directed by veterinarian, give oral medication 1-2 hoursprior to feeding animal.
Dosage Forms/Preparations/FDA Approval Status/Withholding Times - Veterinary-Approved Products:
Hetacillin Potassium Tablets: Equivalent to 50 mg, 100 mg, and 200 mg of ampicillin activity inbottles of 100 & 500; Hetacin®-K (Fort Dodge); (Rx) Approved for use in dogs and cats.
Hetacillin Potassium for Intramammary Infusion: equivalent to 62.5 mg of ampicillin activity per10 ml syringe; Hetacin®-K (Fort Dodge); (Rx) Approved for use in lactating dairy cattle.
Slaughter withdrawal = 10 days; Milk withdrawal = 72 hours.
