Doses - NEOSTIGMINE BROMIDE, NEOSTIGMINE METHYLSULFATE

Dogs: Dog

a) 1 - 2 mg IM as needed; 5 - 15 mg PO as needed (Kirk 1986)
For treatment of myasthenia gravis:
a) For dogs weighing:less than 5 kg = 0.25 mg qid IM5 - 25 kg =0.25 - 0.5 mg qid IM> 25 kg = 0.5 - 0.75 mg qid IM; Doses are initial guidelines only; titrate doses to thepatient (Hurvitz and Johnessee 1985)
For diagnosis of myasthenia gravis:
a) 0.05 mg/kg IM (Diagnostic if clinical improvement occurs in 15-30 minutes; pre-treatwith atropine) (LeCouteur 1988)
For treatment of curare overdoses:
a) 0.001 mg/kg SQ, follow with IV injection of atropine (0.04 mg/kg) (Bailey 1986)

Cattle: Cattle

a) 1 mg/100 lbs of body weight SQ; repeat as indicated (Package Insert; Stiglyn® 1:500 - P/M; Mallinckrodt)

Horses: Horse

a) 1 mg/100 lbs of body weight SQ; repeat as indicated (Package Insert; Stiglyn® 1:500 - P/M; Mallinckrodt)
For treatment of paralytic ileus of large colon:
a) 2 - 4 mg SQ q2h. Use after correction of large bowel displacement; discontinue when
GI motility returns. May cause increased secretion into GI tract and therefore may beharmful in small intestinal disease. Does not produce progressive contractions of smallintestine. (Stover 1987)
b) 0.02 mg/kg SQ; duration of action may be very short (15-30 minutes); does not increase propulsive motility of jejunum and may delay gastric emptying time. (Clark and Becht 1987)

Swine: Swine

a) 2 - 3 mg/100 lbs of body weight IM; repeat as indicated (Package Insert; Stiglyn® 1:500- P/M; Mallinckrodt)
b) 0.03 mg/kg (Davis 1986)
Sheep:a) 1.0 - 1.5 mg/100 lbs of body weight SQ; repeat as indicated (Package Insert; Stiglyn®1:500 - P/M; Mallinckrodt)
b) 0.01 - 0.02 mg/kg (goats also) (Davis 1986)
Monitoring Parameters - Dependent on reason for use.
