Dr. Louis Hartjen founded Acacia Animal Hospital in Escondido, California on February 2, 1959 at 1254 W. Grant. The street name was later changed to Mission Road due to confusion with Grand Avenue, another nearby street. In 1962 the hospital was expanded and remodeled. This property was purchased by the State of California in 1968 to build the onramp for the Interstate 78 East bound traffic merging onto south bound I-15.

In December 1971, Dr. Hartjen began construction of the new Acacia Animal Hospital and boarding center at 1326 W. Mission Road. Construction was completed and the new Acacia opened for business Memorial weekend, May 1972.

Dr. Hartjen retired and sold the practice to Dr. Gary Gallerstein in June of 1984. As the practice grew, Dr. Gallerstein realized it had outgrown its present location and moved into the former Walker Animal Hospital building at 1040 N. Broadway in November 1993. In March 2002 Acacia Animal Hospital's name was changed to Acacia Animal Health Center to better encompass the medical philosophy of our doctors and staff. February 2004 was another milestone for Acacia, as Dr. Carmine Bausone became a partner. Once again, due to growth and a desire to create a beautiful custom state-of-the-art facility, Acacia moved to 655 W Citracado Avenue in Escondido in January 2006.

Acacia has, historically, been very involved and supportive of our local community. This has involved working closely with and contributing to the Escondido Humane Society and the House Rabbit Society. In addition we offer no fee veterinary care for numerous animal wildlife organizations.

Acacia also financially contributes to numerous local charities and school activities. We also provide speakers to local schools, as well as, tours of our new facility.

L.S. These vets really care! Their staff really cares! Hannah is tremendous; I asked her if the vet could help me with my situation, she put me on hold and went to ask. They didn't have an available appointment, so she let me do a drop off! They're so wonderful, and dynamic in their approach to care. They just impress me every time. I would give more stars, if I could.
K.D. We've been taking our pup here for the last 2ish years. Our most frequent services we used were Overnight Boarding and Sedated Nail Trim. It is very hard to find a place to trust especially with sedation AND to find a place that can handle a dog that is aggressive towards other pets. For boarding they have special services to keep him separate so there is no accidents. (SO STRESSFUL as the dog mom! ) After his first stay my fears were smothered! They absolutely loved our pup and I knew they actually cared about his well being & understood what type of care he needed. Every time we were there they would recognize him by name and adored having him. Now that we have moved out of state I had to request his medical records to another Vet. I talked with Jolene - She helped me transfer the medical records. She was incredibly sweet! So refreshing to talk to someone that is so cheerful! I am all about reviews and leave them honestly! I can't say enough good things! Over 2 years of visits almost every 6 weeks on average and then all the times we had to board him for our long weekend trips... yes this place is GREAT! Over that time period I can't even recall having any type of issue with the staffing or services big or little. Hope this helps someone who is looking for a great place to trust with their pets.
M.N. I've been going to VCA since I adopted my dog from the Escondido Humane Society 2 years ago. I've started bringing my 14 year old chihuahua to this clinic as well due to the excellent service I recieved when I brought my rescue. Today May 11, 2019 I brought my 14 year old in for a wellness, an exam of her mastitis irritation and for concerns with the quality of her stool. Dr. Scarhlet Kelly was very attentive toward my dog's needs and listened to what I had to say about her condition and behavior. While the clinic is expensive, you know you're getting care from Vets and nurses who truely love animals. My dog recieved a biopsy, a urinalysis, guided cystocentis as well as 3 mediciations for GI health and stool softening. One of the staff also was kind enough to trim my dog's nails at no additional charge. I really appreciate this clinic's staff!
C.H. Comfortable waiting room, helpful receptionist. Relief areas for dogs outside. Professional & knowledgeable staff happy to answer questions. Nurse and Veterinary Doctor explained symptoms and possibilities related to our pet's illness. Unfortunately after x-ray & diagnosis, our pet had a degenerative terminal illness, and the only logical solution was to humanely euthenize (I decided). I deeply appreciate the patience and compassion shown by the Doctor, nurse and attending staff at Acacia. The sincerity and compassion spoke volumes to us.
