BISACODYL
Chemistry - A diphenylmethane laxative, bisacodyl occurs as white to off-white crystallinepowder. It is practically insoluble in water and sparingly soluble in alcohol.
Uses, Indications - Bisacodyl oral and rectal products are used as stimulant cathartics in dogs andcats.
Onset of action after oral administration is generally 6-10 hours and 15 minutes to an hour afterrectal administration.
GI transit time thereby affecting absorption of other oral drugs. Separate doses by two hours ifpossible.
Storage, Stability, Compatibility
Bisacodyl suppositories and enteric-coated tablets should bestored at temperatures less than 30°C.Pharmacology - BISACODYL
A stimulant laxative, bisacodyl's exact mechanism is unknown. It is thought toproduce catharsis by increasing peristalsis by direct stimulation on the intramural nerve plexuses ofintestinal smooth muscle. Another effect is it has been shown to increase fluid and ion accumulationin the large intestine thereby enhancing catharsis.Uses, Indications - Bisacodyl oral and rectal products are used as stimulant cathartics in dogs andcats.
Pharmacokinetics - BISACODYL
Bisacodyl is minimally absorbed after either oral or rectal administration.Onset of action after oral administration is generally 6-10 hours and 15 minutes to an hour afterrectal administration.
Contraindications, Precautions, Reproductive Safety
Stimulant cathartics are contraindicatedin the following conditions: intestinal obstruction (not constipation), undiagnosed rectal bleeding, orwhen the patient is susceptible to intestinal perforation.Adverse Effects, Warnings
Bisacodyl has relatively few side effects; occasional cramping, nausea, or diarrhea may be noted after use.Overdosage, Acute Toxicity
Overdoses may result in severe cramping, diarrhea, vomiting andpotentially, fluid and electrolyte imbalances. Animals should be monitored and given replacementparenteral fluids and electrolytes as necessary.Drug Interactions
Do not give milk or antacids within an hour of bisacodyl tablets as it maycause premature disintegration of the enteric coating. Stimulant laxatives may potentially decreaseGI transit time thereby affecting absorption of other oral drugs. Separate doses by two hours ifpossible.
