AAHA-accredited, Board Certified doctors & hospital provide the finest care for your pet: Cherokee Animal Clinic in Overland Park, KS
with 4 Vets.
Thank you for choosing Cherokee Animal Clinic! We have cared for pets in the Overland Park area since 1964. Our veterinary hospital has gone through many transformations in the last four decades, but our commitment to providing the best veterinary medicine and compassionate care for pets has never changed.
Cherokee Animal Clinic started out as a 1,200-square-foot building in 1964. Dr. William Murray founded the practice, and he was joined by Dr. Richard Branson in 1970. Dr. Branson took over ownership of the clinic in 1984 and cared for pets here until 2005, when Dr. James Kontras and Dr. Mike Stenstrom took over the hospital.
Our large, state-of-the-art veterinary hospital features five exam rooms, an American Animal Hospital Association-approved surgical suite, a hospital ward, an intensive care unit, two pharmacies, two waiting rooms, two reception areas and a full-service boarding kennel for dogs with a separate area for cats. We also offer a small garden settee for those times when a peaceful place is needed to discuss your pet's health or if a client needs to just "stop and smell the flowers." It is our goal to offer high-quality veterinary medicine that combines modern technology with old-fashioned comfort for your pet.
Cherokee Animal Clinic is the 1999 winner of the Veterinary Economics "Practice of Excellence Award." We are a proud member of the American Association of Feline Practitioners and the Cornell Feline Health Center. Cherokee Animal Clinic is certified by the American Animal Hospital Association. This designation is achieved by only a small percentage of animal hospitals in the country. AAHA certifies animal hospitals based on a series of strict criteria encompassing everything from client service to animal health care. We believe AAHA certification demonstrates our commitment to your pet's overall health and well-being.
Pet Wellness Care
Preventive Health Care
When it comes to keeping your pet healthy, prevention is key. Diseases and chronic conditions in their early stages are easier to treat and the result is greater quality of life for your pet. We recommend at least two wellness exams each year for your pet, which is the equivalent of one exam every 3-and-a-half years in human time.
During each wellness visit, we thoroughly examine your pet. Your pet's heart and lungs are evaluated, his or her eyes and ears are examined, we examine your pet's mouth and teeth, check for signs of tumors, skin conditions and problems with the joints and muscles, and palpate your pet's abdomen for signs of swelling and abnormalities. As part of your pet's complete physical examination, we also perform various laboratory tests. These include fecal examination for detecting internal parasites, blood tests for detecting heartworm, and general blood screenings for identifying potential medical problems and conditions. It is our goal that your pet remain in such good health that we see him or her only for wellness visits.
When you bring your pet in for an exam, please inform us of any changes in behavior or if he or she is exhibiting unusual symptoms. You are your pet's greatest ally when it comes to healthcare and keeping track of any lifestyle or behavior changes can help us detect diseases and chronic conditions before they start.
