All of our strays are found here on post and most come to us with no means of identification. An owner has three full business days to claim a lost animal; if no claim is made on the animal it becomes the property of the U.S. Government. We can then put them up for adoption.
While the animals are at the stray facility we run fecal tests to check for intestinal parasites in addition, the cats are tested for feline leukemia/aids and the dogs are tested for heartworms. Even though an animal may show up as negative at the time of testing we always recommend they be retested again in four months for leukemia/aids in cats and six months for heartworms in dogs.
The adoption includes vaccinations appropriate for its age at the time of adoption, a microchip and if the animal is not already spayed or neutered then an appointment will be made to have this procedure done as soon as possible.
The new pet owner has a 5 business day trial period to see if the animal can be integrated comfortably into its new home. Within this 5 business day trial period you may bring back the animal and select another stray for adoption but there is NO refund.
If you're not sure what to do in order to make your new home ready for you new family member ask for an adoption packet on Cats/Kittens or Dogs/Puppies. This may help answer a few additional questions you may have. We also provide a list of recommended off post vet clinics, boarding facilities, dog obedience classes and shelters.
