Animal Emergency and Referral Associates located in Fairfield, NJ with 22 Vets: AAHA-accredited, Board Certified doctors & hospital provide the finest care for your pet.

In 1977 a dedicated and visionary group of veterinarians founded the Animal Emergency Center, a center designed to treat after hour emergencies by creating a fully staffed emergency medical facility. These doctors realized that that rapid growth of the animal population along with broad technological advances, demanded a state of the art facility that would address the urgent and critical needs of their patients. The Center became the first hospital dedicated to small animal emergency care in the United States.

In 1984 Dr. Michael Palescandolo became the Director of the Animal Emergency Center and guided the center to the vanguard of emergency/trauma medicine and surgery. The Center grew rapidly and was expanded in 1996. The Center began to add board-certified specialists in 1997 and, as a result, became a true 24/7 medical facility for animals.

In 2003 Animal Emergency & Referral Center partnered with Veterinary Referral Centre in Little Falls and this led to the development of the Animal Eye Center of New Jersey, a facility dedicated to veterinary ophthalmology. In 2004 Dr. Palescandolo completed the construction of a 15,000 sq. ft. modern medical center in Fairfield, New Jersey and the entire staff of Animal Emergency & Referral Associates moved to their new home in May of that year.

The additional space at the new facility allowed room for 25 veterinarians (emergency and specialists) and included two fully digitalized x-ray units and a new comprehensive computer system so that most of the medical records could be filed electronically and remote access cameras could be placed for additional patient monitoring. An internal medicine procedure room is dedicated to ultrasound, endoscopy and other specialized diagnostic techniques, and a stand alone surgical unit exists with three separate surgical suites – one dedicated to orthopedic surgery, one dedicated to neurosurgery and a general surgery room with two available tables. The surgical equipment used is equivalent to much of what is used in human medicine today. In addition, there is now housing for 130 animal patients, a blood bank, an emergency surgery suite, and an oxygen generating unit to supply all 14 intensive care oxygen cages as well as the oxygen needs of the entire hospital. The hospital has a large electrical generator to ensure that even in times of electrical outage patients will continue to receive the care they need.

Dr. Palescandolo made the decision to employ only experienced emergency veterinarians and specialists as well as a comprehensive support staff of highly dedicated individuals who are willing to work throughout the night and give up time with their families on holidays to care for their furry (or feathered) patients.

The growth of Animal Emergency & Referral Associates is a testimony to the quality of care, dedication, and compassion of the doctors, nurses, assistants and receptionists who are the life blood of AERA. Their team mission continues - to provide outstanding emergency and specialty care for our beloved animal companions.

    S. They took care of my baby Shadow. they were very kind and patient with me coming in and not being able to get my words out. very affordable and the vet was sweet. i owe her one haha thank you guys for being kind and taking care of my pookster.
J.K. About two months ago i rushed my 11 year old cat around midnight because she was showing signs of internal bleeding. my suspicion was confirmed & she was not given a great prognosis or quality of life after care. Dr. Alyssa Williams walked me through the euthanasia process with such compassion, care, and professionalism. she showed my little girl love & softness in her last few moments with me. thank you Dr. Williams for making the worst moment of my life & the hardest decision ever, a little bit easier & clearer for me. you were phenomenal.
    S. Our dog was bite by ticks when we went to trails. The ticks was there for three days. We found it this morning and there is a bullseye ring on his neck already. Our friend refer us to here and they quickly solve our issue. Doctors are all very nice and professional. One thing I’m sure is they are really care your pet and work with full heart. I can feel it. Thank you!
L.E. I'm so glad I brought my cat, Midnight, here. They helped him with his urinary blockage. The doctors, nurses, staff were all helpful, respectful and kind. They constantly kept me updated on my cat's progress, even while he was in the hospital for a few days; I heard from the doctor or spoke to someone every day. Much respect and thanks goes out to everyone at AERA! I can't thank you enough ❣❤❣.
N.X. It has been 1 year post op of Meadows and kisses appointment with the dental specialist Dr. Jung. I am happy to say that both cats are doing very well because of the care of Dr Jung. He has been so knowledgeable and understanding of everything even questions I've asked. What an amazing, thoughtful and patient doctor. I want to say thank you to his assistant CiCi another wonderful person and patient. If your cat needs a dental specialist this is your doctor. I am very happy I can cry tears. Thank You!
K.S. Daisy came in dehydrated and had to be hospitalized immediately. The vets made me aware of the seriousness of the situation but didn't alarm me. They made me feel very confident that she would stay there overnight and be fine and that's exactly what happened. The entire staff from the upfront reception area, to the techs and the vets were very caring and professional. They made me feel very confident in leaving Daisy overnight. For my puppy's sake I hope I don't have to visit again, but wouldn't hesitate in going back to AERA.
R.D. This is there new building(they moved down the road) and it is Immaculate. It is well kept, clean, open, and the vet technology is advanced.. I couldn’t ask for better help yesterday. My puppy was very sick and we were able to get right in to be seen. The staff was very polite and courteous. Dr. Tran was very helpful and explained all the possibilities. I even called back later to let him know about my pups potty issue and he answered. I can’t thank them enough for everything!
N.B. UPDATE! Dr. Jung has now successfully done both my cats Meadow & Kisses. I am beyond satisfied and he is so kind, honest and very knowledgeable. Both my cats are doing so well. Need a oral surgeon for your fur baby honestly Dr. Jung is the best! Thank you again! From the moment I walked in the staff was welcoming and accommodating. My baby girl Meadow needed full mouth extraction due to her stomatitis. Before surgery I was notified of what procedures needed to be done and what time medication to give. The staff explained it thoroughly and if I had questions they asked the doctor and got back to me quickly, which is amazing communication. Dr. Jung is. fantastic! He explained everything to me and even followed up me to check on meadow. He did an amazing job and I must say it's been 2 weeks and she has such an amazing improvement. Remember every cat is different so results may vary. Thank you to Dr. Jung's Dental assistant as well, she was so nice and explained all my concerns as well. Unfortunately i will be back as I have a second cat that needs treatment as well. I am not worried because Dr. Jung and staff are amazing! Thank you All!
