Philosophy
At CKVC, we believe that each of our companion animals is precious and deserves the best of care. We 'go the extra mile' to ensure that our patients are comfortable, clean and cared for. Each of our patients rests on soft, clean and cushioned bedding. Cats are housed in a 'cats only' ward where kennels are kept clean and where the cats are regularly petted and talked to. Dogs are walked outside at least four times daily. Our dog and cat wards are located so that our patients are continuously observed in the middle of the working part of the hospital. Patients are our top priority.
Honesty and integrity are important components of our hospital. We are straightforward about fees and anticipated outcome for each of our patients. We want you to feel informed and involved in the decision making process involving your pet's care.
Services
Twenty-Four Hour Care: We have trained veterinary staff on duty at all times, every day and night, including weekends and holidays. Our 24-hour staffing means that your hospitalized pet is never alone. Being on-site to care for your pet means that medications are given on time, IV fluid therapy is administered correctly, patients stay clean and dry, pets receive extra TLC and any change in condition is recognized immediately.
Diagnostic Capabilities: Our diagnostic capabilities include ultrasonogrophy, endoscopy, blood pressure monitoring, electrocardiography, a complete on-site laboratory, and radiograph capability, which can accommodate even the largest dogs.
Anesthesia: We use the safest available anesthetics and are able to safely anesthetize even geriatric and high-risk patients if necessary. A veterinary nurse monitors blood pressure, ECG, oxygenation and other vital signs during each surgical procedure. Pain control is provided for all patients.
Surgical Services: We adhere to the highest standards for all surgical procedures. Dr. Holly Smith and Dr. Randy Scheuermann both have experience in orthopedic surgery.
Minimally Invasive Surgery: Our laparoscopic and thoracoscopic capability allows us to perform many surgical procedures with smalll incisions and minimal post-operative pain.
Dentistry: Dental services include teeth cleaning and polishing, extractions and oral surgery.
Pharmacy: We maintain a complete inventory of pharmaceuticals, prescription diets, and heartworm and flea prevention products. We can also provide at-home delivery for many medications and foods.

Emergency Care
Central Kansas Veterinary Center is open twenty-four hours, including weekends and holidays. Trained veterinary staff are always on duty at the hospital to care for pets who need medical or surgical care during the night, on weekends, or on holidays. Our intensive care capabilities include oxygen therapy, continuous ECG monitoring, blood products, heated kennels, and other diagnostics and therapies often needed by very ill animals. We are also happy to answer any questions you may have, day or night.
Blood Bank
Veterinary transfusion medicine has undergone tremendous growth in recent years. Patients that are being treated for trauma or those requiring surgery may depend on blood transfusions for survival. CKVC has performed many blood transfusions with great success. Blood transfusions are most often administered to treat profound anemia. They may also be indicated in cases of rat poison ingestion, clotting disorders and other conditions. Because of increased demand for blood products, we are asking clients to consider volunteering their pet for our Blood Donor Program. Our donors must be selected and meet the following criteria:
- Between 2 and 8 years of age.
- Dogs must be at least 50 pounds.
- Cats must be at least 8 pounds, spayed and never have been pregnant.
- Must not be taking medications except for heartworm and flea prevention.
- Annual complete blood count and chemistry profile should be obtained.
- Dogs and cats must be screened for tick and heartworm disease.
- Cats must be indoor only and be screened for Feline Leukemia, FIV and Haemobartonella.
- Must be current on vaccinations, heartworm prevention and flea prevention.
Central Kansas Vet Center will provide blood typing, tick and heartworm disease testing, annual blood work, feline leukemia, FIV and haemobartonella testing, annual fecal evaluation for parasites and an annual exam with vaccinations for blood donors at no cost to owners. Blood donors will also receive a discount on any emergency services they might need. Please call Janessa at CKVC if you have an interest in the blood donor program.
